ho ho ho.. i always have the same problem with books.com.tw.. but i love the site... except for its shipping.. it's as expensive as the book itself, most of the time!

so... what i usually do is, order before i go to taipei and then picking them up from 7-11. hehe ;)

anyway, enjoy your wait and your book.

i know! it's so expensive, luckily, i bought 3 copies this time, one for me, one for miss z and another one for miss m. XD so in general, i saved a tiny bit in sharing the cost with them.

have u bought it yet? or do u like eileen chang at all?

I paid $21 plus 8.375 sales tax and just be done with it. I didn't bother to order online, not that I couldn't wait but since I was in the book store and started browsing just a little bit. So I thought I should just support the store as I have been in the store many times before and seldom bought anything from them.

i guess they'd be really grateful during this big recession. i really hate to admit it, but whenever you watch news on telly, it keeps telling you that we're in recession - and yesterday was the first time in a month that i watched tv news, it was saying the unemployment rate in the states hit the new high in 25 years... blah blah blah... man, i'm depressed.

anyways, how are you liking the book so far?

You have to accept the fact that Chang was from Shanghai and from a well to do family. She had this complex feelings toward Shanghai people and had in principle a disdain for everybody else, almost, like people from Hong Kong, how the faces are flat and how the girls are loud. Once you passed that, it's easier to enjoy. Plus the names of the characters are a killer, it's mostly English names translated back to Chinese, I was reading them in awe and scratching my head as what exactly are the original English names, Audrey, Andrews? Sometimes the narrative jumps around a bit, was it in the past, was it in the present, was it a flashback? Was it from the narrator or the main character? It could possibly be just me.

lcl:chang's famous“只有上海人能夠懂得我的文不達意的地方”, shows everything. i guess it'd be hard if you didn't understand her background. i think it'd be hard to read 亦舒 if you didn't have a mixed background like her (meaning: mixing shanghaian culture with that of hong kong).
